Why I Stopped Recommending Nest for Heat Pumps

The Problem With Nest and Heat Pumps

Let me be straight with you. I was rooting for Nest for many years. But the percentage of homeowners who had problems versus those who didn't was high enough that I stopped recommending them.

With furnaces, it's hit and miss. With heat pumps, it's a different story entirely. Heat pumps are more complex — they have multiple stages, auxiliary heat, defrost modes, and they modulate. Nest has a well-documented history of not playing nicely with any of that.

I hear from homeowners in Vaughan, Toronto, and all across the GTA, and it's always the same complaints: two-stage cooling not behaving right, temperature readings that are off, the system short-cycling, or it worked fine for a few months until a firmware update changed something and now it doesn't work at all.

These aren't one-off complaints. Go look at any HVAC forum or Reddit thread and you'll find pages of people saying exactly the same thing. Nest has had years to fix this. I'm still waiting. And even if they do, I'd want to see two to three years of stability before I'd trust it again — not a band-aid fix.

Here's what really gets me: a heat pump runs twelve months a year. It handles most of your heating in winter and all of your cooling in summer. That's your entire home comfort system on one piece of equipment. You cannot afford a thermostat that's fighting it instead of working with it.

Why Ecobee Is the Right Choice

Ecobee was designed with complex HVAC systems in mind from day one. Multi-stage heat pumps, dual fuel systems, auxiliary heat staging — it handles all of it properly. No workarounds, no firmware Russian roulette.

Indoor Air Quality Monitoring (Ecobee Premium) tracks CO2 levels and airborne chemicals from cleaning products, cooking, and furniture.
